A WORD OR TWO FROM THE CAPTAIN.

After several weeks of rained off games/ byes/ and general lack of cricket, Ashton finally took to the ground to take on Charlton; a team rated favourably and vying for the lead in the table (unlike Ashton). A refreshed Ashton lost the toss and were put into bat on a pitch that promised many suprises, being damp and slippery in places. This proved to be the case as we lost opener Mobley early on, he was followed next ball by Shipperbottom (15 - 2) Grier and Waller steadied the ship with a nice partnership of 173. eventually the Ashton innings ended with Ashton scoring 204 for the loss of 4 wickets, a run rate of just over five runs per over. Charlton started brightly, making their intentions clear, this however was at a cost as wickets began to fall. Good steady bowling from Waller, Barnes and Hughes, coupled with some smart glove work behind the stumps from Abbley meant the pressure beagn to mount. With six overs to go, Charlton were still in touch with one wicket remaining, sensing a change was needed Tom woods was brought back into the attack (despite taking himself off earlier through pain) Tom provided the team with the wicket we needed, clean bowling Charltons number eleven. Ashton won by 15 runs, Well done to all who played.

(Mike Grier 127, Tom Waller 31, Dave Hughes 3 -49, Tom Waller 3 - 34)

Cheers

Mike
